Brief description

Office applications such as spreadsheet programs are now so widespread in specialist departments that many companies would grind to a halt without them. To ensure that office applications can continue to support business processes in the company effectively and efficiently even in the face of frequent changes in requirements, they must increasingly be suitably programmed, supplemented, adapted and also further developed by their specialist users. This trend is further reinforced by the increasing digitalization. In this module, students are taught the necessary skills and abilities to independently supplement, adapt and further develop Office applications (e.g. MS Excel). The focus is on the programming language Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which is particularly suitable for end-user orientated programming and has great potential for automating work processes.

Teaching and learning outcomes

1. Conceptual basics of end user development

2. Presentation of selected office products for the support of business information processing

3. Introduction to the development of office applications with MS Excel and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)

4. Management and governance of office applications

Overall workload

The total workload for the module is 150 hours (see also "ECTS credit points and grading").

Recommended prior knowledge

Knowledge of the operation and control of a PC as well as knowledge of the handling of office software (e.g. according to ECDL).

Knowledge Broadening

Students possess knowledge of the state of the art in business information processing based on established office solutions.

Knowledge deepening

Students will be able to identify the application areas of end-user development to support operational organizational design.

Knowledge Understanding

Students will be able to integrate Office applications into existing business processes, organizational structures, and application landscapes.

Application and Transfer

Students are able to support and automate basic business tasks by designing office applications. They master the use of an end-user oriented programming language and a modern development environment.

Academic Innovation

Students are able to handle software development problems within the framework of a design-oriented research approach (Design Science Research, DSR) and to systematically develop implementation-relevant sources of information.

Communication and Cooperation

Students have the ability to actively accompany development processes for end user development and to critically evaluate and communicate the benefits of office applications.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

Students will be able to evaluate the economic consequences of using office applications.
