- Brief description
The modul communicates scientific knowledge and practical Examples of a responsible breeding of farm animals according to the rules. Applied methods of statistical farm animal genetic and legal conditions (Animal Breeding Law) an important base. Methods for preservation of genetic diversity with regard to genetic resources in farm animals are elements of courses. Courses will obtain both examples of conventional and organic systems.
- Teaching and learning outcomes
basic genetic: DNA, chromosomes, SNPs, genes, mitosis, meiosis, Mendel's laws (Mendelian genetic)
population genetic and farm animal breeding: hereditiy, hybrid vigour, gen and genotype frequencies, breeding program, breeding value estimation, methods of breeding, preservation of genetic diversity, product quality, animal health, environmental sustainability
farm animal breeds: cattle, pig, sheep
reproduction/fertility: cattle, pig, sheep
legal conditions: Animal Breeding Law

- Knowledge Broadening
Students are able to explain composition and heredity of genetic information. They are able to describe the basic composition of breeding programmes and the procedure of breeding value estimation. They can explain the meaning and the procedures of preservation of genetic diversity. Students are able to describe important farm animal breeds and to name their characteristics. They can outline reproduction of cattle, pig and sheep and classify essential topics of farm animal breeding legislation.
- Knowledge deepening
Students are able to explain the further development of single steps of a breeding program. They can compare single steps of preservation of farm animal genetic resources. They can confine single methods of reproduction against each other. They can outline typical characteristics of farm animal breeds and discuss the aims of the Animal Breeding Law.
- Knowledge Understanding
Students are able to to deepen their knowledge with the help of a comparison of breeding methods according to genetic diversity, different methods of reproduction and the legal framework.
- Application and Transfer
Students are able to avaluate different methods of breeding and steps of a breeding program according to product quality, environmental impact and animal health.
- Academic Innovation
Students develop innovative breeding concepts to improve anmial welfare, product quality and environmental impact.
- Communication and Cooperation
Students are able to communicate an up to date farm animal breeding to non-specialists. They are able to utilize a correct technical and ethical wording. The application of breeding methods related to practical circumstances leads to a good origin of cooperations with practical farms/ventures.
- Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism
Students can recognize the potential of new developments. They can refelct thier own role als breeder. They can prove their decisions from a technical point of view.
